*Micro Disk - a small disk, they come in various small sizes, between 5 micrometers to 20 micrometers, and are made out various materials one of them being SiO2, silicon dioxide.
Here, is a picture taken by an SEM, Scanning Electron Microscope.
* Optical - of, or relating to light, aka electromagnetic radiation
* Resonator - reflecting, continuously, indefinitely, losslessly, trapped.
Think of two mirrors, that are lined up, and when you look into one then you see the reflection of the mirror, reflecting the other mirror, reflecting the mirror, reflecting the other mirror self, reflecting the mirror, reflecting the other mirror.....
Get the idea?
Now you may ask, hold it, this is glass... I look through glass windows everyday, and the light travels right through.
What are you talking about it being trapped in this resonator?
This is the hard part, light getting trapped in glass.
Through a phenomenon called total internal refection, the boundary between glass and air becomes reflective to light that hits it at a low angle.
A simple analogy of this is a rock skipping across the water, the rock will bounce along if thrown at a low angle, but will go through if it hits from too high of one.
For the more curious this also has to do with Brewster's angle, and reflective indices
ok, so now the term, 'Micro Disk Optical Resonator' means something to you, but still there is more...
*
Fiber optic Cable
- this is a cable, made out of glass, SiO2, the glass is so thin that the cable bends and acts similar to a piece of spaghetti.
*
Tapered Fiber - ok, take a small blow torch, take a pulling machine, add fiber.... and poof!
Now you have a tapered fiber that has been pulled to a changeable diameter.
Usually the fiber is bent in a U shape, and glued onto a thin sheet of glass.
